Why are values important?

I am often asked questions from prospective clients about what to expect at Peaceful Haven Therapy.  Instead of rattling off a list of theories or models that would add little clarity to these types of questions, I have compiled a list of values that briefly and accurately describe my therapeutic approach.  When selecting a therapist, you should never have to wonder whether your therapist shares your values, so I've removed the guesswork from the process!

Collaboration

Whenever it’s time to set therapeutic goals, the best outcomes occur when clients and therapists work together to formulate objectives.  Despite my therapeutic competence, I am under no delusion that I have all the answers.  In fact, clients are typically better experts regarding their own experience than any therapist or counselor can ever hope to be.

Compassion

If it were always straightforward and effortless for people to overcome their problems, there would never be a need for therapy or counseling.  I care about the well-being of my clients, and I am dedicated to improving the quality of life of anyone who steps into my office because I have a passion for helping people, regardless of how big or small their problems may seem.

Empathy

Any therapist worth his or her salt needs to have a willingness to understand—and attempt to share in—each client’s experience.  Effectively utilizing empathy requires persistent awareness and active listening.  I’m determined to empathically connect with my clients so that the process of healing can truly begin.

Hope

I believe that all people, whether they know it or not, have the ability to accomplish their goals and achieve their dreams.  Regardless of how hopeless our life circumstances can seem, I am confident that the journey ahead is full of limitless possibilities when people sit down and work together.

Integrity

We all know that feeling of uneasiness when we experience people who are less than truthful with us.  Therapists who practice in a deceitful manner—and break a sacred trust granted to them—risk causing unimaginable harm to their clients.  I strive to be honest and straightforward with all of my clientele because I would expect to be treated with a similar professionalism.

Patience

We live in a society that often demands and even advertises quick results.  While there certainly is value in quickly achieving positive results, the expectation that successful therapy must provide immediate results is typically not a prudent one.  Patience in therapy is critical because a successful outcome sometimes requires a significant time investment, and I'm committed to the best possible outcome for the duration of therapy.

Peace

It’s hardly surprising that people frequently feel overwhelmed and stressed out by today’s fast-paced culture.  Anxiety is consistently reported as a top reason for requesting therapy in this country.  Recognizing this concern, I am committed to creating a peaceful therapeutic environment so that clients can find the space to address their concerns and worries.

Respect

We all encounter people with whom we disagree on a variety of topics and issues.  It is particularly critical for therapists to place their personal beliefs aside to avoid distraction from the actual objectives of therapy.  It is my responsibility to respect clients when they hold different beliefs and values from mine because healing is only achieved when people can focus on their shared goals, not on petty personal differences.

Support

When the struggles in our lives intensify, feeling like we are alone in the face of adversity can be overwhelming.  I’m a big believer that clients are better equipped to conquer adversity when they have supportive and reliable people in their corner.  I am continuously looking for ways to marshal support for my clients so that they have every possible tool to succeed in their goals.

Wisdom

All of the training and experience in the world mean absolutely nothing if one lacks the wisdom and judgment to leverage these assets.  I constantly re-evaluate the way I interact with my clients because I know that no two clients are the same and every single problem I encounter is uniquely different from the last.  My clients receive optimal care because the consequences are too important for me to be imprecise.
